Brunch. NYC. Things. Watching Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters right now. Still one of my Allen favorites. Over the past years I have come to understand what an aesthetician Allen is. His films, including the quite imperfect ones, i.e., Vicky Christina Barcelona among a few others, document faithfully and seductively the things that delineate not so much life but rather lifestyle in NYC. His camera operates like a still camera rather than a motion camera. His eye is profoundly more photographic than cinematic at times. His scenes are framed as photographs, and movement in them becomes almost accidental detail. Though hyper-textual, his narratives are driven more by cinematic images than plot or even character development. His work proves exemplarily cinematographic. Whoever wonder what cinematography is, ought to (re)view Allen's cinema. Just exquisite cinematic composition. Allen's filmed NYC is made of things rather than individuals.
