A solitary tree

I never read the Lord of the Ring trilogy. I have seen parts of Peter Jackson's cinematic rendition. I think that in the second or third installment two of the hobbits encounter a hidden colony of trees. These trees are spectacular for reasons other than their majestic size and port. Not only do they talk and remember (as they have become saddened by the abuse they and many other trees suffer at the hands of humans), but they also become uprooted to move, move and move. A tree that speaks does not surprise me, but one that moves, now, that is pure mythology. I believe that a quality that adds to trees' enigmatic beauty is their static nature. They come to represent permanence with arrest, applomb, utter victory and resignation. There is a something otherworldly in things that cannot stop being what they are.
