SF is a layered city, though probably not as much as NYC. We stayed in the Mission. During one of his walks alone (as I was working on conference paper), he found several allies with strikingly colored murals on the walls. Thematically, they were all politically and socially engaged. I wish I had my camera that afternoon. I could have captured a few images with his iphone, but for some reason I chose against it. There were some breathtaking flowers as well. Colors and shapes I had never seen in New York. I miss those flowers and those walls, walls that speak of a Latino presence in the community in ways that I have never seen in NY--for reasons that are fairly well known. I wish I had the camera with me that day.
