In the Arts District

When he and I came to LA for his job interview, we became fascinated with the Arts District, which seemed like a mellow interpretation of some pocket area in NYC. Of course, not nearly as dense with tall buildings, commercial options, and briskly walking residents, but it captured some of a comparable aura. We thought it'd make a perfect home for us. Once he got the job and we started the hunt for an actual home, we discovered that location wise the Arts District was less than ideal. So our search moved to the west side of the city, and that took us to our current place of residence, Santa Monica. Not quite the same, but we are learning to appreciate what it has to offer, like that magnificent ocean, otherwise known as the Pacific.

These were captured the day I went to Handsome Coffee. I entered the sleek establishment, ordered myself a cup of black coffee, sat in one of the high stools that was beside another unoccupied stool. Across from me stood another series of stools, some being used by patrons, others recently abandoned. Their once filled mugs left behind as traces of their temporary presence in the coffee shop. Silence surfed the medium-size space. Some gazes traveled across emptiness to meet other gazes that quickly moved away. Mine was still fixed in those empty mugs.
